Snake Encounter 1·1

————————————————

It happened too suddenly.

With a crisp “bang", the blue-and-white porcelain cup fell to the ground , rolled twice, and broke into several small pieces. At the same time, the shiny brass bell polished by time also fell from the sky, jingling twice as if in panic, and finally leaned on the side of the fragments.

“Master…Master, Master …Someone come! The Master was bitten by a snake!…"

A sharp voice cut through the rare sunny afternoon in the early spring. The originally quiet and peaceful mountain courtyard was filled with hurried footsteps, tapping and stomping , and even the sound of things being knocked over in the panic.

Shen Qingxuan stared forward with eyes wide open, trying hard to see clearly the beast that was biting him, but everything in front of him was blurry, as if his eye membrane was covered with a thin layer of white gauze. No matter how hard he tried, he could not see clearly. He could not help but be shocked at the power of the snake venom, but secretly thought that man proposes, God disposes. He had thought of countless ways of dying, but how could he have expected that he would end up at the fangs of a snake.

Thinking of this, he was not surprised. He just closed his eyes. He vaguely knew that the servants who came over had moved him away from the chair. They called the doctor in panic and shouted for some antidote pills.

what happened after that .

The eldest son of the Shen family was bitten by a snake at the villa.

The news seemed to have been spread by the flapping wings of birds in the mountains. Within a cup of tea , the sound of several horse hooves was heard on the originally peaceful and quiet mountain road.

The carriages and sedan chairs came one after another, hurriedly, and finally stopped at the gate of the villa. The riders on the horses and the nobles in the sedan chairs got off the ground in a hurry, entered the door without waiting for anyone to greet them, and broke into Shen Qingxuan’s room.

The man lying in the green gauze tent had his eyes closed, and his forehead was glowing an ominous dark purple color, which even gradually spread to his entire face. His originally light-colored lips looked strangely red on his dark purple face. His handsome appearance was gone, and at first glance, he looked three parts human and seven parts ghost.

“Xiaoxuan!" The elder with slightly frosted hair cried out in a low voice, his voice mournful and extremely sad, “My son!" He wanted to say more, but was choked with sobs.

“Master." The butler standing beside him interrupted his master’s sorrow and reminded him, “Master, please don’t be sad at this moment. The most important thing is to find a way to save the young master’s life."

“Yes, yes." Under the impact of his sympathy for his son, Master Shen, who had just come to his senses after being reminded, quickly stood up, covered his eyes with one hand, and asked the servants around him with a choked voice: “Did you detoxify him?"

“There are often snakes, insects, rats and ants in the mountains, so we have all the usual medicines. We also gave the young master a pill that specifically cures snake venom, but… the effect is not very obvious."

“What kind of snake is that? Can you see it clearly?" asked the housekeeper anxiously.

“It was coiled on the vine trellis in the yard and was blocked by branches. I only had a quick glance and couldn’t see it clearly. It was as thick as a bowl…" The man gestured as he spoke. As soon as he finished speaking, he was slapped hard on the forehead. The housekeeper said angrily, “You picky boy, you are talking nonsense!" He ignored his crying and explained to Master Shen, “Master, Lu lived in the mountains when he was young, and I have never heard of a snake that can grow so big. Unless it is a python, but although a python is big, it will not bite people easily, and its venom is not so strong. This boy must be talking nonsense. He described it in a more horrible way, just thinking that he would be punished less."

Master Shen was upset and didn’t care about these things at the moment. He just shouted at the servant to get out.

“Where did you bite?" The housekeeper asked the maid who was shivering at the door railing. She was Shen Qingxuan’s personal maid.

“On the wrist," the maid’s face turned pale and she said hurriedly, “The sun is shining today and the young master wants to bask in the sun, so I pushed him to the yard. Like usual, the young master wanted to drink a pot of scented tea. I made tea for the young master and prepared to bring some snacks. I just turned around and took a few steps when I heard the sound of a tea bowl falling to the ground. When I turned around, the young master had been bitten by a snake…" At this point, the maid’s eyes were red and she was about to cry.

“Did you see the snake?"

“I saw it. The man didn’t lie. The snake was really as big as a bowl, coiled on the railing. When I saw it, it just retracted its body. I saw a huge black snake, but its belly was a little golden. I have served the young master in the mountains for many years, and I have seen some snakes that were killed, but I have never seen such a big snake…"

“Is it really that big?" The butler was still skeptical.

Her knees softened, and the girl fell to the ground, crying and swearing: “How dare I lie about such a serious matter? If I lie even a little, I will die miserably!"

While the butler was looking at the testimony, Mr. Shen pulled out his eldest son’s wrist and saw that the wound caused by the snake’s teeth had been cut into a cross shape by the blade. He felt a little relieved, knowing that a clever servant had cut the wound in time and sucked out the poisonous blood. However, the snake venom was so fierce that it made an adult lose his mind in a short time. I’m afraid that the poison has already entered the lungs and it is really difficult to clear.

Master Shen clutched the thin wrist, feeling sad. It is said that the eldest son is the pillar of the family, but he had a son when he was thirty, and Shen Qingxuan fell into an ice cave when he was eight years old. He had a high fever after being rescued, and he became mute and his lower limbs were frozen . He could only lie on the bed . He thought that he would take good care of him and not ask him to earn fame and fortune. With the huge wealth of the Shen family, it would be enough to support his eldest son to live a safe life. But unexpectedly, at the age of twenty-seven, he was bitten by a snake again.

“Evil beast!" With a low cry, Master Shen wanted to catch the snake and eat its flesh alive.

“Master, don’t worry." The old housekeeper tried to comfort him again: “The young master has always been in poor health and has been kept in the villa for many years, so we have all kinds of rare medicinal herbs. Maybe there is still a way."

“What can I do?"

“Master, do you still remember the incident during the Mid-Autumn Festival the year before last when someone from the southern barbarian land that had business dealings with the Shen family presented two pills that claimed to be able to cure the world’s most bizarre poisons?"

“Remember , remember , I took the medicine… Is it really useful?"

“I don’t know either, but I heard that there are many poisonous insects and wild beasts in the Nanman Wetlands. Who knows, maybe this pill really has a miraculous effect?"

“Why don’t you bring it here?" Mr. Shen stood up quickly.

“yes."

The medicine was quickly brought out, dissolved in warm water and fed to Shen Qingxuan. When he was fed the medicine, Shen Qingxuan’s teeth were clenched, his cheek muscles were stiff, and he looked like he was barely breathing and could die at any time.

The room was full of panic and the atmosphere was heavy.

As night fell, servants lit candlesticks. The light flickered.

The door of Shen Qingxuan’s room was sometimes opened and sometimes closed, and people came and went in and out. But no one noticed that there was a person standing quietly in the shadow of the swaying oil lamp.

His black hair fell to his waist, and he was also wearing a black robe. He stood with his hands behind his back. The lapels of his clothes were embroidered with ancient patterns in gold thread . He had a cold expression and stood there with his lips pursed for who knows how long.

No one noticed, and no one even looked at him as they passed by him. If anyone had seen him, they would definitely not ignore this man who seemed like a demon in the world.

But indeed, no one knew of his existence.

It was late at night, and Mr. Shen was exhausted physically and mentally. It was the end of February, and although it was already spring, the night was still chilly. He coughed softly a few times and felt a dull pain in his head. He wanted to be with his son, but the cruel shackles of age had shackled his deep love for his son. Under the persuasion of the housekeeper, although reluctant, he still went to the wing room warmed by the charcoal fire.

Only the housekeeper and three servants were left in Shen Qingxuan’s room, still guarding it.

Another two hours passed, and Shen Qingxuan, who had been breathing weakly, gradually began to breathe steadily and forcefully. The man standing motionless in the shadows raised his eyes slightly, with a hint of surprise in his eyes, and he did not believe that there was a magic medicine in the world that could cure his poison.

Sure enough, he looked intently at the thin and weak man on the bed for a while and realized that this was a last burst of energy.

Those antidotes can only delay the death for a few seconds at best. Detoxification? Pure wishful thinking.

Shen Qingxuan tried hard to move his eyelids, but his eyelids felt as if they weighed a thousand pounds and he couldn’t open them.

The maidservant standing by noticed it and shouted in surprise: “Master, Master!"

The sound was filled with reckless joy, waking up the courtyard and forest that had just fallen asleep.

Soon, Master Shen, wearing a cloak and shoes and socks, ran over, staggering , shouting all the way: “Xuan’er, Xuan’er…Xuan’er, are you awake? Dad is so worried…"

Perhaps the call from his relatives gave Shen Qingxuan strength. His eyelids, which had been trembling all the time, struggled hard and opened. His eyes were scattered, but after a while they gradually focused and there was some spirit in them.

Shen Qingxuan opened his mouth slightly, but no sound came out.

But everyone knew that what he said was: Dad.

“Hey, Dad is here." Tears streamed down his cheeks. Mr. Shen no longer cared about the posture of an elder. He held his son’s hand tremblingly and murmured, “Qingxuan, are you feeling better? I’ll be relieved if you’re feeling better…"

Shen Qingxuan used all his strength to force a smile on his stiff face. But he knew in his heart that he could not escape this time. His whole body was paralyzed and he could not move. When he breathed, a sweet and fishy smell filled his mouth and nose. His eyes were dark and clear.

This is probably what it feels like to be dying.

In fact, there is nothing to be afraid of. For a useless person like him, death is not as scary as living.

The only things he couldn’t bear to leave behind were his parents and younger brother.

His family members were his only support over the years, and he couldn’t bear the thought of his parents being so sad after his death.

He imagined his own death, not because he gave up on himself. In fact, he had become accustomed to living in a wheelchair and unable to take care of himself for so many years. It was not a difficult thing to bury his childhood ideals of riding a horse.

But my own health is getting worse year by year.

In the past, I could often bask in the sun, have someone push me, and go for walks in the mountains and forests.

In the past two years, it has become worse. The slightest breeze would cause me to fall ill, and each time it was more serious than the last. Later, I was unable to get out of bed for one or two months.

He hadn’t left the house this winter and rarely even opened the window.

After recovering from an illness, he wanted to bask in the sun, but he disturbed a snake that had just ended its hibernation and also came out to bask in the sun.

Thinking of this, Shen Qingxuan couldn’t help but smile, thinking that it was because of the sun, it seemed that both he and the snake were uncomfortable.

He knew clearly that the snake was originally coiled on the railing to bask in the sun. He was sitting on a chair, and the man and the snake did not interfere with each other.

Everything could have been peaceful, and everyone could have gone back to their rooms after basking in the sun.

But somehow a piece of leaf with dirt on it fell into the clear tea. Being a clean person by nature, he poured out the hot tea in the bowl without thinking .

The snake was not seen at the time. By the time he realized something was wrong, the tea had already spilled, and the steaming hot water soaked the shiny black scales.

Before he could withdraw his hand, the startled snake turned around and bit him.

In fact, it was his own fault. Water that hot would have fought back even if it was a rabbit, not to mention a snake.

It was a really majestic snake. Although he only had time to take a quick look at it, he was distracted by the pain. But Shen Qingxuan still remembered that the snake was all black and shiny, and it looked majestic when it coiled up with its head erect. Its neck and abdomen were golden, and it was particularly dazzling in the afternoon sun. Later, he wanted to take a closer look, but he couldn’t see clearly. He didn’t know if the snake was burned.

It is said that this legless animal is covered with tiny scales, so it is unlikely to be hurt by a cup of hot tea.

There was another blinding blackness in front of him , and his father’s voice was fading away. Shen Qingxuan tried hard to hear what he was saying, but he could only hear the roar in his cochlea. All the messy and broken sentences came from the roar, unable to reach his mind, and he couldn’t hear clearly.

He knew that his end was near, and he couldn’t tell whether he felt more sad or relieved. He had always known that he was going to die, but he was still caught off guard by this scene.

The concern in his heart made him want to take one last look at the world that had been with him for more than 20 years. Although he had no strength to breathe, Shen Qingxuan still tried to open his eyes wide, and he stubbornly gathered the scattered spirit in his eyes and looked at his relatives. He stared for a long time.

His well-maintained but now aged father, the old housekeeper who had been busy for the Shen family all his life, the maid who had already collapsed into a ball and was crying loudly, and those familiar people who had taken care of him wholeheartedly over the years… His sight slowly froze as it passed through everyone’s face, and Shen Qingxuan slowly curved the corners of his lips, revealing a faint smile, as if saying goodbye.

His smile was extremely shallow, and even looked hideous on his face that was three parts human and seven parts ghost.

But it depicts the deep attachment to and reluctance to life.

Such desperate lingering, yet with relief from death.

Perhaps this smile was too shocking. The cold man who had watched the whole scene from beginning to end in the shadows raised his eyelids, and his eyes, as dark as the water in the abyss, had ripples of splashing water .
